Default General Custom Crosshair Tips, FAQ, and Installation Instructions

Note: This was taken from my Crosshair Tips and FAQ that I posted in the GunZ Official Forum.

FAQ

Q: What is a crosshair?

A: A crosshair is the thing in the center of your screen that you aim with.

Q: What is a recoil crosshair?

A: A recoil crosshair is a crosshair that have recoil parts, usually crosshair_l.png, crosshair_l_pick.png, crosshair_r.png, and crosshair_r_pick.png for left and right recoil parts. Files that end with 'pick' means it's the aimed version. A recoil crosshair's recoil parts will move away during coninuous fire and return back to normal when you stop. In a way, it shows where your bullets might hit. If you're using an inaccurate weapon, the recoil parts will start further away.

Q: What is a fullscreen crosshair?

A: A fullscreen crosshair is a crosshair that's almost always, if not always, 800x600 in size. It's meant to take up the entire screen so extra things can be added like a custom HUD. You can make a box for your weapon in a corner, a box for the chat box, 'HP' and 'AP' signs on your health and armour bars, and much more.

Q: Why won't my crosshair show up/work properly?

A: There are many reasons to why a crosshair doesn't show up/work properly. Remember that the only format supported is .png, so don't save it as anything else.

- First of all, make sure that the crosshair names are correct, meaning:-

crosshair.png - This is for your unaimed crosshair.

crosshair_pick.png - (Optional) This is for your aimed crosshair.

crosshair_t.png - (Optional) This is for the recoil part on top of the crosshair.

crosshair_t_pick.png - (Optional) This is for the aimed version of the recoil part on top of the crosshair.

crosshair_r.png - (Optional) This is for the recoil part on the right of the crosshair.

crosshair_r_pick.png - (Optional) This is for the aimed version of the recoil part on the right of the crosshair.

crosshair_b.png - (Optional) This is for the recoil part on the bottom of the crosshair.

crosshair_b_pick.png - (Optional) This is for the aimed version of the recoil part on the bottom of the crosshair.

crosshair_l.png - (Optional) This is for the recoil part on the left of the crosshair.

crosshair_l_pick.png - (Optional) This is for the aimed version of the recoil part on the left of the crosshair.

- Make sure the crosshair files are in [Wherever you installed GunZ] > CUSTOM > CROSSHAIR

- Make sure there are no unrelated files in that folder.

- To use the crosshair in the game, click on 'Options' at the top right corner and go to 'Misc.' Set your crosshair to 'CUSTOM.'

Q: Why is there a white box around my crosshair in the game?

A: This is because you didn't set the background as transparent. Unfortunately, MS Paint does not support transparency, so you'll need an image manipulation program that does. Programs like GIMP, Photoshop, and Ultimate Paint support transparency.

Q: Can I see other people's custom crosshairs in the game, like when viewing replays or watching others in team games?

A: No. The crosshair you see will always be the one you set.

Tips

- If you're making your first crosshair, go for something simple first to determine your style. Try not to make something too complicated, as it may end up odd. I learnt this the hard way.

- If you want something practical make sure the crosshair is semi-transparent.

- To aid in the crosshair user's aiming, try making a small hole in the center. Not too small so you can see through it, and not too large so that it does not hinder pinpoint accuracy on your first shot.

- If you want a crosshair that's practical, try not to make it too bulky, especially around the center.

- Try not to make the crosshair too dark, or too bright in colour. This may make it difficult to aim in dark or bright areas.

- Try not to use white, grey, black, or any shades of those colours. It might be hard to see in dark or light areas.

- If you want a crosshair that can stand out in both dark and bright areas, try making a crosshair with dark and bright lines close together. This will cause the dark colour to kick in in bright areas and the bright colour to kick in in the dark areas.

- If you have trouble making a fullscreen crosshair, try adding a screenshot of the game as a seperate layer as a guide. When you're done with the crosshair, remove the layer.

If you'd like to see some of the custom crosshairs that I've made, take a look here.

Default General Custom Crosshair Tips and FAQ

this tutorial was made because _zephyre_ forgot many important instructions for installing crosshairs

What is a crosshair?
A crosshair is the indicator or picture in the center of your screen that is used for aiming.

Where do i get crosshairs?
- If you find a crosshair you like on the forums then:
>right click and save (only if the picture is showing on the page with a transperent background)
>download the zip file (located at the bottom of the post)

- you can also make your own crosshairs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Installing crosshairs-

- First, go to the start bar and click My Computer

- Double click on Local Disk C: [or where ever you installed GunZ]. then open the Program Files folder, then MAIET, then GunZ

- Inside of the Gunz folder should look like this:

- Now, open up the CUSTOM folder. Inside of the CUSTOM folder there should be another folder called CROSSHAIR. (if there is not a CUSTOM folder with a CROSSHAIR folder inside of that, create them in the Gunz folder)
PUT THE CROSSHAIR FOLDER INSIDE THE CUSTOM FOLDER

> a zip file with the CUSTOM>CROSSHAIR folders are added at the bottom
[updated] - extra crosshair folder is added. now you can just copy and paste which crosshairs you want and put them in the CROSSHAIR folder. i also added most of my crosshairs even regular ones. click this link
http://rapidshare.de/files/21285985/...hairs.zip.html

(I like to have an extra crosshair folder in the CUSTOM folder so it is fast and easy to swap out crosshairs)

- Copy and paste the unaimed and aimed versions of the crosshair into the CROSSHAIR folder

-this is a picture provided by RPGoof. it pretty much sums up the folders in order

-Rename the crosshairs:
YOU HAVE TO DO THIS OR IT WONT WORK!!!

crosshair - for the unaimed crosshair.

crosshair_pick - (Optional) for the aimed crosshair.

- A recoil crosshair is made of 1-4 outer moving parts that are used to simulate spread-

- to install a recoil crosshair name, use "crosshair" and "crosshair_pick for your center part, and rename the outer moving parts as...

unaimed:

crosshair_t - (Optional) for the recoil part on top of the crosshair.

crosshair_r - (Optional) for the recoil part on the right of the crosshair.

crosshair_b - (Optional) for the recoil part on the bottom of the crosshair.

crosshair_l - (Optional) for the recoil part on the left of the crosshair.

aimed:

crosshair_t_pick - (Optional) for the aimed version of the recoil part on top of the crosshair.

crosshair_r_pick - (Optional) for the aimed version of the recoil part on the right of the crosshair.

crosshair_b_pick - (Optional) for the aimed version of the recoil part on the bottom of the crosshair.

crosshair_l_pick - (Optional) for the aimed version of the recoil part on the left of the crosshair.

- do not put .png at the end of the 'rename' because gunz will read it as crosshair.png.png and it wont work

- To use the crosshair in the game, click on 'Options' at the top right corner, then click on the 'Misc' tab. Set your crosshair to 'CUSTOM' on the drop down list.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-problems that can happen-

i have more then version of gunz, do i just need to make a CUSTOM folder in one my gunz folders?
-no, for every version of gunz you need to make seperate CUSTOM>CROSSHAIR folders in order for your crosshairs to show up in the game

can i have more then 1 set of crosshairs in gunz?
-no, you can only have 1 set of crosshairs. unaimed and aimed.

- If there is a white box around your crosshair in the game then it doesnt have a transperent background. to learn how to make the white background transperent check out this tutorial: Tutorial: Transperency (3 different programs)

- if you have gunz running while you put your crosshairs in the CROSSHAIR folder it wont show up. the reason is because gunz isn't constantly refreshing its information. so just restart gunz and the crosshairs will show up
-----------------------------------

there are 3 different types of crosshairs that you can make
1.regular-center crosshair (no recoil)
2.recoil- center crosshair and 1-4 outer recoil pieces
3.fullscreen- covers the hp bar and any other part of the screen

- To make a fullscreen crosshair, make a new file 800x600 pixels
- use a screenshot to help with the measurements
- to get the crosshair exactly in the middle of the picture,
either use the x and y coordinates (400 for x and 300 for y), or use the ruler bars

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
thanks to LeetKitteh for providing some of the screenshots
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here are my crosshairs:

fullscreens:
set #1 - Zim's Fullscreen Crosshairs
set #2 - Zim's Fullscreen crosshairs -2-
other:
all kill - the new (better quality) ALL KILL crosshair!

Arrow General Custom Crosshair Tips and FAQ

Many people still seem to post daily that they don't know why their crosshairs don't work so here's a quick guide to fix any additional problems.

Once you find a crosshair you want don't save it yet.

First, find out where you saved your GunZ files. The one in "My Documents" is not it. For most people it can be found under "Program Files". To find this out open up "My Computer" in the Start menu. Copy and paste the following address to the top address bar. C:\Program Files\MAIET\Gunz After doing so you should find yourself looking at a series of folders named Interface, Maps, Quest, Model, etc. If you had an error then search through your computer files until you are able to find a folder named "MAIET". Assuming that you found the folders, look for one called "CUSTOM". If you are unable to find it then create a new folder and call it "CUSTOM". Open this folder. You should see a folder called "CROSSHAIR". If you are uable to find it then create a new folder and call it "CROSSHAIR".

Now save your crosshair(s) into that folder under the following address. C:\Program Files\MAIET\Gunz\Custom\Crosshair Once saved, go into the folder. Rename them accordingly:

Normal
crosshair (Crosshair)

crosshair_pick (Crosshair with enemy in sight)

Recoil
crosshair (Crosshair)

crosshair_pick (Crosshair with enemy in sight)

crosshair_t (Top recoil part)

crosshair_t_pick (Top recoil part with enemy in sight)

crosshair_r (Right recoil part)

crosshair_r_pick (Right recoil part with enemy in sight)

crosshair_b (Bottom recoil part)

crosshair_b_pick (Bottom recoil part with enemy in sight)

crosshair_l (Left recoil part)

crosshair_l_pick (Left recoil part with enemy in sight)

Note: For the recoils make sure all the parts are correct according to the authors post. All of these names should have ".png" after them if you aren't using Windows XP because Windows already recognizes them. It would show up like "crosshair_pick.png.png" which isn't read correctlly in GunZ.

Now, make sure that if GunZ is runing that you close it and restart. The crosshair won't load until GunZ has been reloaded. Inside GunZ, click on "Options" then "Misc." Under "Crosshairs" click on the drop-down menu and select "Custom". You should now have your custom crosshair equipped when you enter a game.

F.A.Q.
Why doesn't my crosshair show up? Make sure that you have fully read the guide and repeat the steps to make sure. Also, ".GIF" files (or moving pictures) aren't supported.

Can my crosshair be seen by other people?
No, it's not seen by them because it's not saved into their computer.

What is a crosshair?
It is a shape or picture used to aim a gun with accuracy.

What is a full screen crosshair?

Similar to the regular, this crosshair fit to the entire screen. But don't worry, the crosshair part is normal size. The rest of it is used to add a customized look to your screen. For example your name may be written in the corner or the area around the health bars may be different.

Why can't I see my crosshair when I use my melee weapon?
Crosshairs are only used for guns because melee weapons don't have projectile abilities. It will disappear when you switch to a melee weapon.

What is a recoil crosshair?
It is a crosshair with moving parts around the sides to show how the accuracy of a gun changes with continued fire.

Can I have moving pictures for my crosshair?
No, they aren't supported by GunZ.

Can I have more than one custom crosshair?
No, you may only have one.
