    Default Public Education

What do you think of public education? I have been reading a few things about various changes in the public school systems, and frankly I am a bit annoyed by them. For the record, I am pro high school exit exam; in my opinion a two year old could have passed that test (exaggeration don't attack this statement).

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. I don't know much about this yet, but perhaps someone does.
(I put this up because a teacher of mine was blabbering about how bad this act is, but I wasn't really listening.)

Here are some things I found in a book called: None dare call it education by John A. Stormer.

    New-new Math:
"new-new math" books tell students that math isn't too
important anymore because computers do the work and then
instructs them to "guess and check" until they get "right"
    answers.
    Inventive Spelling:
how children across America, instead of being taught to
spell, are encouraged to use "inventive spelling" and parents
are instructed not to correct them. "Educators" say spelling
isn't necessary because "spell-check" on computers will do
    the work.
I fortunately have not encountered any of the above in my school years. But I ask is this stuff really happening?

What would your reaction be if you received the following quiz in a history class:
    (1) What do you think caused your heterosexuality? (3) Is it
possible your heterosexuality is just a phase which you might
outgrow? (5) If you've never slept with a person of the same
sex and enjoyed it, is it possible that all you need is a good gay
lover? (7) Why do you as a heterosexual feel compelled to
seduce others into your lifestyle? (9) Would you want your
children to be heterosexual knowing the problems they would
face, such as unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted dis-
eases, domestic violence, etc? (13) Considering the menace of
overpopulation, how would the human race survive if
everyone was a heterosexual like you? (15) How can you
become a whole person if you limit yourself to compulsive,
exclusive heterosexuality? Shouldn't you at least try to
develop your natural, healthy, homosexual potential?

On the whole the United States public school system is an absolute wash. Teachers are lapping up tenure and from then on out are practically set for as long as they wish to remain in the district. Teachers in and out of tenure have minimal logical skill related to their field of education, and not many are thoroughly enthused to provide a challenge to students or even lend an air of interest in their own field.

Students are being pumped out nigh-illiterate, dependent on machines that the system reinforces the use of (as you covered). High school is for socializing and just floating your way through a quagmire of poorly-prepared busy work and easy tests. Personal responsibility is out the window because it's honestly reasonable to believe a kid's claims that they just "have a bad teacher."

The education system needs less sick days for students, more standards for teachers, and the spine to actually teach rather than shuffle kids through grade by grade at the taxpayer's expense.
I give your post a 5.5/5. It has amazing graphics.

i go to a public high school.
they don't care much about education. .
well in a sense they do but it's physical education.
they spend money on weights and a new rubber track while all the history books lay forever abandoned.
as well as geometry books, english books, everything.
o_o; i wanna go to a private school but i'm not that smart ._.'
.. i blame public schools and myself.

I for one went to a rich public school district, and it was really good. But, most public schools are real shatholes. The US needs to stop spending so much money on useless programs like the war on drugs and really cut back the military budget and send the funds towards education.

    It's sad.

Yeah, my high school was similar, top-ranking in the state, in a nice town, tons and tons of money pumped in from the state. Still a ****hole as far as education was concerned.

One of my teachers did nothing but play Pocket Tanks against students during class and left everyone with busywork. This teacher is still there, a year later and a year closer to becoming pretty much unfireable thanks to tenure. :/

Man, nobody should vote anyway. Your ballot only counts if it makes or breaks a tie.

But like you said, a bunch of uneducated dumbasses are the last thing we need. "GRRR IMMA VOTE FOR GOD AND GUNS HUHYUCK" seems to win out over "I'm going to weigh the pros and cons of person 'A' against person 'B.'"

They know gays and bis only make up for 4-7% of the world population. They know that your preference is a choice and they are trying to manipulate your choice by making you feel bad about your sexuality. They know that kids dont really think for themselves, and by making these questions seem credible they will get kids to think it must be true. They are insinuating that you might be gay cuz you slept in the same bed with a guy and had no problems with it.

What annoys me the most is that they act as if homosexuality is less lustfull as heterosexuality. Homosexuality is actually less healthy, they are saying heterosexuality is just a phase (funny how it's been going on since the begining of time huh?), homosexuality is not free of domestic violence, homosexuality has a greater chance of STDs, homosexuality DOES NOT make you whole. This is by far one of the worst cases of propaganda I have EVER seen and it pisses me off to no ends.

    New-new math:
    ....wow,
that reminds me of what I do when I get stumped on a math problem XD
    But to encourage that method?
That's just dumb....it will only make math a more slow and boring process than it already is.

    Inventive spelling?
There is only one way to spell most words...and that's what should be taught.
Especially with a nonintuitive language like English.

And about high school exit exams, my state has one (WASL) and it's ridiculous that people are protesting against it, it's easy as hell, I was asleep for half of the test administration period (I was sleepy and it was divided into large sections), and got at least 90th percentile in all my categories. If you can't pass one of those, you're not really trying and you're gonna fail in life anyways (unless if you are lucky enough to get enough money with other means).

Agreed. I don't know if it's just me, but a lot of the drug using kids seem to be the most intelligent at my school... or maybe I'm crazy.

You both should get those teachers moderated. Well... unless they are your friends I guess.

I and the author of the book I got this from are 100% in agreement with you. I think the STDs one was the biggest lol to me; it's sad though that some of the kids apparently did believe it. Parents of course rushed the school, but the school board defended the teacher saying he had the right intentions. (High School History Class Quiz-the teacher admitted to be a homosexual.)

I have 2 of the exact same teachers you just mentioned... one plays solitare all day and just tells us to read a certain page doesnt even check our homework i heard hes only certified to be a gym teacher ( but i doubt that ) and another teacher who just eats the whole time.....we did have 1 good teacher though i must say who actually taught us about the our subject and the real world.... but they got so many complainents against the fat teacher who always eats cuz she was losin kids homework and just givin them a 0% which really drops down the grade in some cases but they couldnt fire her cuz shes been there too long or somethin i dunno.

I have encountered just guess and check and i go to a private school but i never get taught anything like a computer will do the work for you.

PS im torrenting that book right now if anyone wants the link to the torrent PM me.

About the guess-and-check thing... that gets impossible when you get to what, Trig? I'm taking trig rite now. Guess and check this (Without using any identities and algebra, calculator use allowed):

    2log(base5)3X = 4.

That's a simple one at that. Wait until you get to like... 1025/(8+e^4x)=5

Yeah public education is becoming extremely poor, and with it America will lose it's place as a superpower.
Since India and China are producing more math and science graduates than America is graduates that seems to be a problem.
Also since a few years ago when i was in middle school and the no child left behind act was passed schools have been getting even worse.
It seems that they want to pump money into keeping everyone passing, while cutting advanced classes (As was the case in my school) so that there could be more remedial classes. Which in my and the other Advanced teachers opinions is a load of crap. Since the retards for the most part just want to sit around selling and smoking drugs and participating in gang violence.

Even as a American I have to agree with you on the U.S.'s lack of math and science. It seems this country is all about lawyers and politicians these days.

I got the slight inclination that you are a teacher...? Anyway, to any high schooler or below in this situation of feeling, held back; I highly recommend you demand concurrent enrollment in a grade school above your current one. If you and your parents give the school hell, they will give in, but you have to be assertive... if not aggressive (personal experience).

Well, the idea of this "new-math" is, with lack of better words, stupid. The way I see it, unless it is something that is nearly impossible to do at the learning stage by hand, such as figuring out the sin of the angle 44.79174981734, then it should be done by hand, no calculators, no computers, just a pencil, eraser, and paper.

Also, if you people want to say you had a bad teacher, then fine, go ahead. You know what though, its your own fault anyways. Sure they might not teach you well, but that doesn't stop you from going down to the library, picking up a book on it, and then reading the damn book to learn. You want to learn about history but your teacher is bad, then go get a book on each historical period that class is supposed to be covering, and read it, study it, have your parents prepare a test over each chapter of it for you, and grade you. It is not all the teachers fault, it is also yours for not taking the inititive to go out and read a book instead of going home and playing Gunz all night long. Get your lazy *** out there and learn something new on your own instead of waiting for your teacher to teach it. Can't say "I had a bad teacher" when you go on to your next level in a college class. You have the textbook, you have a library, you have the internet. Use your resources and learn.

That's it, I'm done with my rant. Good-bye and happy Gunz playing.

    I agree and disagree.

It is true a person has the ability to teach themselves.

But consider school taking up 6+ hours in a child's day, and then that child works 8+ hours a day. Now consider the child NEEDS this job to support the family or something. It would be in the best interest of the child for those 6hrs of school to actually teach and challenge them.

There are still things the child can do to better their situation, but it should not be the motto for a school to oppose or get in the way of a child wanting to learn faster and more.

Welfare programs can also help the family. If the child needs to work then the parents obviously aren't doing their job as parents. Even a single mother should be working three or four different jobs if need be to keep their child from having to pay for anything as far as bills go.

Yes, it is bad enough that some teachers don't make those hours worth it, but that is also why they have something called home schooling. Sometimes it is better in the case where the school fails the child.

In my limited personal experience, that's been the best way to learn.

My biggest beef with american education today is that what teachers perceive as education is something so much less than what it used to be. Learning is not about understanding anymore, it's about memorizing, and simply knowing. I can't count all the times i've asked my teachers to inquire more deeply about a certain subject and they just repeat to me what's on the test. You know, their funding comes from how good their test scores are, which leaves room for some really sick intentions.

When I was just starting my freshman year, I was really excited because I was pissed at the poor excuse for education I got in middle school. I thought that in high school, I would really LEARN and UNDERSTAND topics and be around other people who would want to do the same thing. I was disappointed. School is no longer even centered around education. It's all a big ****ing pageant. Not only among the students themselves, but in student-teacher and teacher-teacher relations. Whoever does what everyone else wants them to gets popular and the more-than-occassional grade bump from the teacher who "understands" the students grade problem. One of my teachers would only accept questions from all the pretty girls in class and then try to be humorous to them.

Anyways, I don't let it bother me too much, because whatever I feel is lost at school, I just study at home. So far, it's been a lot better than education at school.
