Over the weekend, an exploit in the software that powers GunZFactor's forum was used by a malicious person to bring down the site and access some of our user data. The site is back online with the offending code removed, and all sensitive user data was encrypted before the fact in keeping with best practices for storing passwords. Even so, we recommend that everyone change their forum account passwords and for any other account that uses the same email and password combination. It's always best when this happens to err on the side of caution.

    Thanks,

Today, I am pleased to announce a new addition to our moderation team. Please join me in welcoming Kadai, who has been a GunZFactor member since 2006, making him just about as old as an oldgen gets. Obviously, he's an established member of the community and will make a great addition as we prepare for the onslaught of new members once Gunz 2 is released.

While we're at it, it would be a crime not to make a serious round of thanks to ALL of our existing moderators, a few of whom have been very active lately keeping our forums clean of the usual suspects of autospam and bored idiots. I want to personally thank Yong, Tsuteto, and Rufinito for being so active during our downtime as we wait Gunz 2. I think Yong has the highest kill count for reported posts and deserves a killing spree bonus Thank you!

    Cheers!

    2. GunZFactor Announcements

In preparation for GunZ 2's release, we're going to be making a lot of updates. The bulk of these updates will happen next week; however, I wanted to post an update today about the significant changes made today to the GunZFactor.com forums:

    Renaming

    1. The Garrison is now named GunZ: The Duel General Discussion
    2. Bounty Stockpike is now named GunZ: The Duel Guides
    3. Challenges and Duels is now named GunZ: The Duel Challenges and Duel Requests
    4. New Player Questions and Answers is now named GunZ: The Duel Questions and Answers
    5. GunZ Clans is now named Clan Listings and Discussions

    Merges

    1. Style and Technique Discussion was merged into GunZ: The Duel General Discussion
    2. Web Media was merged into Off Topic
    3. Streams and Streaming was merged into Off Topic
    4. Clan Discussion has been merged into Clan Listings and Discussions
    5. Official MAIET Announcements has been merged into GunZ: The Duel General Discussion
    6. GunZ Fan Movies, GunZ Fan Art, Screenshots, and GunZ Fan Fiction has been merged together, given prefixes, and renamed "GunZ: The Duel Fan Works"

    New Forums

New Forum: GunZ Private Server Discussion
New Forum: GunZ 2 Fan Works

Yes, this now means that discussions about Private Servers are now allowed on the forums. Currently, they are the only way to play the original GunZ: The Duel and we'd like to see that grow, at least until an official server is put back online.

You'll also see that we now have a place for GunZ 2 Fan Art, Fiction, and Movies. Hopefully we'll see some talented artists give us something to look at while we wait for GunZ 2's release!

    Cheers,

    2. GunZ 2: The Second Duel

It appears that we have a final confirmation from MAIET that there will not be a k-style in GunZ 2; however, it does appear that they're trying to convert the moves and create new options for combat that will appeal to "veteran players" as well. We'll keep you posted if there are additional responses.

However, as some of you might remember, we never intended to develop k-style but it was rather created by players. K-style in fact originated from a glitch. Also, although k-style was loved by the majority of old fans, it created a huge entry barrier to newbie players at the same time. In Gunz 2, we wanted to make the game accessible to much bigger number of gamers. Our goal is to keep the stylish action but make the control easier. We also added other features such as class system to keep veteran players interested, too. We want you to remember that it was you, the players, who came up with k-style, and we believe that you will come up with even more unique ways to enjoy GunZ 2: The Second Duel. You'll see my point once you're in the game.
    And a 2nd response to a player's feedback:

K-style originating from a glitch is irrelevant. Glitches do not typically break games, they only change them, and Kstyle was not an exception. The kind of Emergent Gameplay that grew out of GunZ 1 is such a rare existance that you should not have thrown the idea away like this. The harmony that existed between the actions you could perform in GunZ 1 created such amazing emergent gameplay---I mean, it's the kind of stuff that game developers dream about! It's the holy grail of game design.

And I didn't even practice K-Style, I was one of the founders of D-Style and wrote the biggest guide on D-style, and most of that wasn't overtly reliant on glitches (again, not saying glitches are bad).

You say that you want us to remember that it was us who created Kstyle, and so that's why GunZ 2 is so "stylistic". That's a cute thought, but a game "looking cool" and a game actually "being cool to play" are totally different ideas. Simplified controls will not make this game fun to play. I will master the controls in two days and then become bored with it.

GunZ 2 is too slow and too simple of a game to be anywhere near as engrossing as the first. I suppose I will have to be the one who creates GunZ 1's true successor.
You have a valid point, yet misunderstood my point. We're not trying to lower the skill cap or difficulty of the game. We're trying to give players more options in combat. K-style may be gone, but there must be new moves that players come up with. Contents created by players. I think that's what makes a great game. There's much room for improvements. We haven't even launched the game yet per se. :-p

Also, on VAC related suggestions. I think that's a really good idea. Hacking in GunZ 1 was terrible. I had to go over tens of thousands of replays to ban all the hackers. We'll look into this more as we aren't so familiar with Steam SDK yet. Also, we might not use launcher if we release on Steam. Again, we'll have look into Steam SDK more for this, too. I'll keep you posted on the prgress later.

Special thanks to Dreadful for the heads up.

    2. GunZ 2: The Second Duel

According from the official account "MAIET Developer" on Steam, Gunz 2 has been confirmed for an estimated second quarter of 2013 in Korea. An ETA for the North American or international versions will be revealed once Gunz 2 has been been given the green light from Steam.

Its been awhile since we've added any new features to Gunzfactor, and with Gunz 2 (allegedly) coming out this year, we might want to start planning or at least tossing out some ideas for features that we'd want integrated into the site. Additionally, we really want to provide as many suggestions for GunZ 2 itself so that our community gets heard!

    We've created two threads of interest:Attachment 63577

GunZ 2: The second duel - Suggestions for MAIET

What improvements / new features would you like to see on Gunzfactor for GunZ 2?

Speak now or never! (or later)

    Cheers!

Ok, this has been an exciting week. Sorry for the downtime! Here's what happened:

I attempted to update GunZFactor's forum software. Turns out, that adding a new column of data on 3.5 million posts takes up a lot extra room. To clarify, GunZFactor's database got too large for the ENTIRE PARTITION that it was located on. So, I had to move GunZFactor's database to a larger location, which in retrospect was not a simple process. Turns out, moving databases crashed a few tables, and those has to be fixed as well. Then I finally updated the software, and went ahead and updated our plugins.

So, pretty much everything has been updated, Gunzfactor is good to go for at least a few months without any futher back-end maintance or upkeep.

    Cheers!
