Why does everyone assume that the girl will dump him like they actually know her?

Because its simple, about 99.9 percent of girls/guys only want the feel of getting a gril/boy its the "omg I have someone who really likes me talk to me everyday ect.." Once that rush of having a bf/gf is over he or she will Break up its a simple conecpt

Admit it when you were 14 or 13 w/e you always wnated a girlfriend just to have one or wonder what it was like after you got that feel of having a gf you would be like why am I with this person again..? Not only that but almost ALL Tennager relationships are like this :
Become bf/gf---->Break up---> get back together-----> Break up

I would FIRST: talk to your friend about the situation you're in. Chances are, he'll be either really understanding and urge you on. Or he'll say no.

IF HE urges you on, then go ahead and continue to talk to her on a flirty basis and see where that takes you.

IF HE says no, then never allow you two to be in the same room together alone unless you want to be fighting your friend. Jealousy...plays a huge part in both friendships/relationships.

Relationships at young ages like 13-14 is just plain stupid. People that young don't even know what "love" is, they just get there ideas about having a girlfriend being cool from movies. I'd say a good age to start a relationship is around 17-18, perhaps 16 even.

Yeah, relationships in high school USUALLY do not work out. Mostly because right after high school a lot of big changes happen. Which can change people and people just sometimes want to be free from and chains/responsibilities other than what they already have on their table.
