Wow they are taking more than 1 billion, they are TAKING PEOPLES LIVES this is complete BS and they have no precedented reason to take someones private information, its just because the judge is some 70 year old man or woman who has NO idea what the internet is besides a series of tubes

you guys have nothing to worry about really because you could easily say that you didnt know it was a link to watch a movie online at youtube. like you could say you got a virius and it changed your homepage to that link(s) ect. or you could say someone on a online forum put a site to Google but it really was www.youtube/haxmovies or w/e .com. because it doesnt show that u watch the hole movie. it saves it that you viewed it. even if it was for a second. so dont worry peeps.

You're not making excuses with your parents, you're probably facing the law.

Well if viacom makes the first step up to this, im expecting all other major companies to follow suit.

What? They wanna drag in everyone, from those who upload copyrighted material to those who are completely innocent? And then take possible private information from us from our IP addresses?

I think I got a better solution. Go and temporarily disallow people from UPLOADING to Youtube, give the entire list of videos uploaded in Youtube, pick out all copyrighted material, track down the people who have uploaded these material, re-allow people to upload again, get people to keep watch over all newly uploaded material (by checking all new uploads) from then onwards. There, isn't it simple? Don't involve the innocent viewers...

The whole problem is that there are over 80 million videos on YouTube. If they were all 1 minute long, that is over 150 years of video. Just screening all the videos would take a very long time, and after watching a video it would take tons of research to prove that it isn't copyrighted material. This is precisely what Viacom wants YouTube to do -- instead of just taking down a video as soon as someone reports it as copyrighted (which seems reasonable to me). Viacom doesn't even have the facts it needs for the lawsuit, which is why they want to go fishing through our private data in the YouTube logs. And this stupid judge is letting them...

I just read that all the information will be anonymous and can't be used to track down individuals. Viacom will not have access to it either. A 3rd part is going to use it to create statistics on how many of the views are made on copyrighted movies.

Even if they had my name, are they going to take action against the millions of repeat offenders, all over the world? no.

When you surf the Internet, you leave your mark (IP address) all over the place. In other words, they're not actually invading your privacy-- you've already surrendered it by leaving your mark all over the place. If you are truly concerned about privacy, you wouldn't even be on the Internet.

Yah, the fact that the IP addresses are available to Youtube kind of makes the whole argument null.

Logging database

Next up is a 12TB database containing logging information on every video ever watched at YouTube. Viacom wants to see just how often infringing clips were viewed, then compare this against noninfringing ones to prove its contention that YouTube, in the early days, was an engine powered mostly by the gasoline of illegal content. The database will also show which username and IP address watched every video, a move with potential privacy implications.

The data set is large, but the judge noted that it could be slapped on three "over-the-shelf" 4TB drives. Request granted, score tied at 2-2.
