CoD4. At the moment, it's the most popular game for the PC. I never played it online, and I recommend it with all my heart.

BTW, don't worry about higher ranked people. They're not gods, they're only gods if you can't play shooters.

Also COD4 is a good idea if you can deal with faster action.

Exteel is nice if you have low expectation.

If you want free I remember Warrock being a good shooter, have a look at the sticky topic about S4. If you have the patience and skill make an account and enjoy one of the best action TPS after GunZ. Aeronauts (points at sig) is a flying shooter game, well worth a try if you'd like something very different, but I have to tell you it's far from a fast game. And lastly another great game with what you were after is Planetside by Sony, a very overlooked huge "planet" based faction based shooter. PlanetSide it was free the last time I played but this was over 1 year ago, still I have good memories of this great game.
