1. About the new quest reward items:

There are various difficulties in developing the quest reward items for GunZ: The Duel. Since there are premium items available for purchase at the item shop, the quest reward items must be equally appealing to those who purchased the premium items and also those who didn't. For that reason, since the very first quest reward item, the Goblin King's Rocket, we tend to follow the concept of most the interesting and unique feature possible.

The most unique item of upcoming Quest reward items must be “The Wing of Catastrophe” (The Lich’s wing). Of course there is also the Odd Gunx2 which we built - this one is quite unusual.

In the Dungeon map, Lich is in the most powerful boss, so we wanted it to have an interesting appearance as well as a drop item that is more valuable than the Goblin King’s Rocket. That’s why we designed it as a Kodaichi (double sword) item, and since Kodaichi is a pair of weapons as one item, we decided to use the wings as the base motif.

Personally I wonder if it would have been better if the size of the wings were as big as the actual Lich’s Wings.

2. About the new quest monsters:

The new boss monsters that have been added are the Lich and Aneramon the Wicked. Aneramon is a medium level boss like Superion the Tainted, and once you figure out the tactic it is not a difficult opponent to defeat. Actually the designs for Aneramon the Wicked and Superion the Tainted were made quite some time ago, but we couldn’t release them because they had very simple fighting patterns and seemed boring.
However, one of our GunZ team programmers was able to fix the system and change Aneramon’s fighting pattern similar to characters found in other shooting games. It is not an easy task to produce such a feature with a P2P(Peer-to-Peer) based game so as a producer I am satisfied with the result of Aneramon’s current fighting pattern.

3. Additional features of the new patch

This patch is quite large in size. This is not because of the memory that is taken up by the new bosses but because of the new sound related resources that have been included. GunZ has been using very few sound effects to minimize the size of client file, and that has always been a personal complaint of mine.

But after many meetings with our Development team we decided to enhance the sound. The most joyous addition that comes to our mind is that a narrator has been included to the game. It was difficult to find a foreign voice actor in Korea, so we had to fly to San Francisco to do the recording.

Mr. Brian Sommers did the narration for GunZ. The recording was done at Chris & Co. Studio at San Francisco.

Also we have added three new songs to the soundtrack. Two of those songs only play during Quest Boss mode, and the other song plays during ordinary battle. The name of this song is ‘Vague Words’ and was created by SoundFA, who has created all the songs for GunZ. This one is my personal favorite. If you listen carefully you can hear the Korean traditional folk song called Pansori (Ssuk dae mo ri). ( I know that no one would have realized this if I didn’t mention it…) We had one of the other songs also use a Traditional Korean instrument called Ajeng (a seven-stringed instrument) and we went with a similar concept on “Vague Words”.

When the background music project started we had to provide a basic concept of the music. We had instruments for folk music (nong-ak-ki) remixed to Techno on our first game “Ace Saga”, and we used Pansori and Ajeng on GunZ. We are going to maintain such attempts to include Korean features into the background music in our games.

4. Upcoming patch

For the coming update this summer we are planning to add a new quest map called “Prison”. In the original plan, the “Kobold” race lives in the Prison map, but the design of the Kobold looks more like a lizard than a dog, so we are planning to change the name of this monster.

Also we are planning to include our very first God-level monster, Palmpow, which we’ve mentioned for sometime. Currently we need to rebuild all these stages again, so it is rather difficult to estimate a precise update time. Palmpow is like a bonus stage so we are not going to give away the requirements for stage entrance. In the Palmpow stage, there are going to be two boss monsters.

That is all for now!
