| Banned | Guide to Using GIMP Glossary: [00] Getting The GIMP [01] Creating a New File [02] Using GIMP [03] Changing colors [04] Brushes [05] Saving --[00]Getting The GIMP GIMP is available for Windows, Unix, and MacOSX Windows Go here to select a mirror Download it and install it. Next, you need the GTK+ Runtime Environment Go here to get it There are 2 versions depending on your OS, Windows 2000 and newer users should use the first one. Those with older than 2000 should get the other. Mac OSX Sorry >_< I don't know Mac at all but here is their site for it: http://gimp.org/macintosh/ Unix Same for Unix: http://gimp.org/unix/ --[01]Creating a New File To create a new file with GIMP, first hit File, then New. It should look like this: ![]() You can change your image size and width here. If you want to make a crosshair, try to be 31x31 or larger. I chose 50x50 for this tutorial. Press Advanced Options and go to Fill With, here you can change your background color. For this use we can set it to transparency. Hit OK. --[02]Using GIMP There are many tools to use with GIMP, some I have not tried out yet >_< ![]() Good luck with your drawing ^.^ --[03] Changing colors With GIMP its easy to change colors. To change colors press the Foreground color in the box. Here you can choose your color, when you hit OK it will make your foreground that color. (Hint: You can also do this to the background) ![]() --[04] Brushes A neat feature GIMP has is the ability to create your own brushes. First, double click your brush you are currently using: ![]() Then, click New Brush: ![]() From there you can create your own unique brush to use whenever you want! =D Here is a little help: ![]() Shapes – Changes the basic shape of your brush(Circle, Square, Diamond) Radius – Changes the size of your brush. Spikes – Changes the amount of spikes coming from your shape. Hardness – How hard your shape is(Such as all one color or descending to lighter colors on the edges) Aspect Radio – Its height (i.e. the higher the value the flatter it is) Angle – The angle of the shape(From 1° to 360°) Name your brush and save, now you can use it! (Hint: Do you have a fuzzy-looking brush but it doesn’t show? Here’s the solution, click the paint brush icon and use that, it allows you to create fuzzy strokes.) --[05] Saving Saving with GIMP is also easy ![]() First, select your file and hit File-Save. ![]() Then you can select your file type either typing it at the top as File.type (e.g Untitled.png) or choose from the list. ![]() Now time to choose where to save it in: First hit the Browse button and choose your folder, then hit Save. Hit OK again and you’ve saved it! ![]() I hope this tutorial helps people who need it. If I’m wrong anywhere or you would like to help please tell me and I'll put you in the credits^^ Last edited by Blakdragon77; 11-07-2006 at 08:58 AM. Reason: Update! |

| Banned | Part 2: There are also other tools, such as: Pencil - Draw shapes with a hard edge, meaning no opacity Fill – Fills up one whole color with another color or a pattern you chose, you can select. Opacity represents how opaque the object is or how transparent it seems. Rotate – Rotates the selected image Add Text – Adds text to your image Gradient – Fills designated area with gradient(Advancing shades of color each getting lighter or darker Zoom – Zoom in or out Color Picker – Here you can click a color already on your image and it becomes your foreground color. (You can press Ctrl with certain items to do this too) Eraser - You can make the designated area blend into the background, or erase it completly. Distance - Allows you detect the distance from one spot to another, and/or the angle between them. Wand - This tool lets you select a color, and it highlights every other color that is the same type. Threshold increases the colors closer to the base color to select. Rectangle, Circle, Custom Cut - Allows you to cut images in a circular, rectangular, or custom-drawn form. Airbrush - Acts like an air brush that sprays on an image, getting darker and more opaque the longer you hold it in a spot. Can overlap to produce colors/darker shades. Smudge - Drag over an object and gives it a smudgy ink coloring. Blur - As the tool says, it blurs an image. Last edited by Blakdragon77; 11-07-2006 at 09:06 AM. |
