Well, how you can improve the plain renders is that you just clap on the top layer is to duplicate it into another layer and hit ctrl+U. Now bring down the saturation on it and bring it behind the color one. Duplicate the color and change the hue with ctrl+B to something that matches your background. Now set the transparency on the older colored one to 60% or something like that and add set the layer style to softlight. The order should be Desaturated, hue changed, color (with color on top).

try not to leave too much empty space and if you do Slap some text in that goes well with the signature
