Expanding Beyond Tutorials

I am a new photoshopper / sig - creator and almost all my sigs have been made from tutorials or combinations of tutorials... I am just curious as to how people created their own signatures.. was it using different techniques from various tutorials or just self-teaching themselves with various methods to see the effect?

After looking at/ referring to many tutorials and getting the best of each, you tend to get your own style. Just mess around with what you feel best.
