Default How on Earth!?

An explanation of how the impossible moves are used in GunZ. Note that it's all fiction and really, quite impossible in real life.

For distribution amongst Blue Whistle trainees only. Private and Confidential.
Blue Whistle Techniques/Skills Handbook, Chapter 42: Dashes.

How is a Dash done? For the purposes of our discussion, allow us to refer to a Dash as a movement in a certain direction at a superhuman speed.

From what is shown in game, a Dash can only be done if a sword, dagger or kodaichi is in hand. Therefore, it is possible to use this as the basis for our hypothesis regarding the mechanics involved in the use and execution of the Dash.

(It is wholly possible, however, that Dashes can be done without a sword in hand, a.k.a. Half-Step, Half-Half-Step, etc. But that's for later.)

The key to the issue is air resistance. The fact is, the human body, with its myriad of shapes and angles, and sheer mass, is an inefficient tool for cutting through the air that surrounds us. Movement as we know it is highly restricted as the shape of the human body causes far more air resistance to be exerted upon the body than on say, a knife or sword. In other words, movement is inefficient. Therefore, so-called superhuman movements require a more efficient shape or angle at which the surrounding air is penetrated in order to allow for a consequentially more efficient rate of movement, i.e. a Dash.

With the use of a sword, however, it is entirely possible that this superhuman may be propagated. With the razor-sharp, cutting edge of a sword held close to the body, air particles that previously crowd in upon the body's irregular shape may then be easily separated to flow around the body, allowing for a far more efficient rate of movement, and hence the Dash may be used.

In essence, it is the sword that improves the efficiency of movement simply because it is the most efficient tool at traversing between air particles given the razor sharp edge.

Utilizing this concept, we can then apply it to Gun-Dashes, as well as Light-Steps and Flash-Steps.

For Gun-Dashes, they are theoretically impossible because the irregular shape of the gun, rather than the hyper-efficient blade of a dagger, simply exerts a greater lack of efficiency upon movement of the human body. However, by slashing at a high speed before switching to a gun, this is possible. This is because a high-speed slash by the hyper efficient blade creates a vacuum as it cuts through the air at a more than proportionate rate to which air particles then regroup behind it. This vacuum, coupled with the identical unidirectional movement of the body, sucks in the human body to its intended position regardless of whether a blade is present. During this period of time, it is wholly possible to draw a gun while Dashing.

Similarly, this vacuum may be created mid-Dash in order to quickly change direction, as in a Light-Step. While Dashing in one direction, an extremely fast slice in the opposite direction opens up a vacuum which attracts the body with superior speed than it is moving in the other direction, causing it to quickly change direction mid-Dash. With the addition of a quick switch between a gun and say, a sword in a Flash Step, the time taken for the sword to cut through the air is much decreased, along with an increased downward angle that "scrunches" up the body, making it a smaller and in other words more efficient object as it moves through the air. This allows for a faster rate of movement and subsequently, a faster Dash.
