The thing is, if they're different, they have to be systematically different across the whole spectrum, or the color harmonies and classifications wouldn't work out properly. They couldn't just be radically different, it would have to be a consistent shift in the way they're perceived in general. Like if you took two wrap-around bands with the full spectrum of colors on them, and rotated one in either direction. And white and black would remain the same for everyone, as would neutral gray.
So the factors of how light = white. Dark = black pretty much cancels out any radical changes to what we see.
