| Gunzfactorian Guardian | so it started out as just a joke, but i've been getting more and more serious about battle rapping and i'm wondering if there is anything that i can do to improve on my abilities. i already read often and my vocabulary is fairly large, and i can easily switch my cadence to match most beats (some that are in a weird time signature can throw me off). I've got some pretty solid wordplay so i can drop some serious punchlines when i have to, too. my problem comes in two areas, delivery and multis. i can spit out single syllable rhymes for days, but multis require like 8 bars of pure filler just to think up a decent rhyme, and usually i'm reaching so hard for the rhyme that the punchline is weak as **** and my already shoddy delivery is totally off. then as far as delivery,i i'm totally lost here. i don't even know what to do. Sometimes what i imagine would be a dope punchline gets almost no reaction from whoever's listening because it probably just sounds like more filler. so, anyone out there know what i can do to improve on my rap game? |

| Gunzfactorian Guardian | I'd have to say that delivery is pretty much entirely natural, unless you take the time to set it all up beforehand. That's not to say you can't get better, only that'll only happen through listening to others and practicing. Because every line is going to be different, you can't just learn some hypothetical formula for timing the perfect delivery. I guess you could say you just have to sell it though. Make it obvious when you want it noticed, be over the top. |

Practice makes perfect. You have to give what the audience wants. Make sure they understand everything you say. Have backups and be ready. Don't let a whack punchline stop you from spitting. Treat it as a filler and add more filler until you feel that you need to end it with a hot-ass line.

| Gunzfactorian Guardian | On top of all of these guy's advice, you sure as hell gotta know your rhymes, this may sounds simple but because in a freestyle you gotta deliver these lyrics with only 10-20 seconds of think time and the rest all improv you gotta know which words you can use at any point. This prevents you from getting stuck at the point where your last word is difficult to find a rhyme to and when ever you pause to pick up the pieces you will loose crowd appeal. If you do get stuck than instead of making the next verse rhyme make the un ryhming verse extend to one you can easily rhyme to. When you do listen to other rappers, listen to certain lyrics that go well together, and never make up your rhymes before a battle because you will have one beat in your head when you write, but the beat that gets played may be off-beat to you ryhme and EVERYONE will know you aint freestylin. Instead rehearse different bindin words you can each on each sentence to that your lyrics make sense as well as deliver the punch line. most of all you gotta front confidence and have your voice show it, put emphasis on your punch lines which a louder tone and even if the punchline aint that good your confidence alone may get the crowd to cheer. The best method of practicing is simply looking over words you can end a sentence with cuz if you have enough flexibility with ending words you can add more lyrical content before you bust out the clincher at the end which is nothing more than what binds your lines together, but the true content is always what comes before the rhyme. Bleh I could go on, but you probably already understand wut I mean. |

and i already know pre-writing is a major no no cuz all your **** is generic and obvious and you cant plan ahead for their disses so there is no way you can flip anything in the second round. Last edited by Lubricant; 05-07-2008 at 10:47 PM.

| Gunzfactorian | If you have an improv troupe at your college or school -- or something like an extemp debate team or w/e...I mean not to sound nerdish, but improv i know is really good for saying crap on the fly. The debate...its improv debate kinda but you learn vocab. |

| Gunzfactorian | Don't worry buddy. The fake rappers of today killed rap and hip hop 4-8 years ago. All you gotta rap about is something that they dont(cars, money, *****es, killing *****s, etc.) A good example of real hip hop today would be the underground hip hop groups DPK(dead poets society) and one of the famous Jedi Mind Tricks. DPS lyrics: "This is a Hip Hop Ressurection! All these fake artists filling up the screen need to bounce question! Hip hop needs a face that aint basic, cause everything is sounding like the same ****, tasteless.Sorry man, someone had to say this someone had to play the part of Jesus and save this. I am that one who raps, spits real life out homie nothin' but facts!" (Chorus) I don' wanna, I don' wanna be like you, Don' wanna do watch you do, Ain' trying to act like a fool, Just gotta keep my cool. |
