Why do people cut themselves?

NOTE: I am NOT racist agaist emo's/ cutters i am just merely curious.

I was just wondering why do people cut themselves? What does it show the world? Do they just do it to make people feel sorry for them? or because they had a rought life. Or to release nautral chemicals within the body to give you the "ultimate high"?
The old catholics chastised themselves beucase they belived jesus went through pain, we should to. They cut/ mutalated themselves. That was for a religious purpose. Still saying again...whats the point ?

1)You can't be racist against a social group.
2)They cut themselves probably because:
*They think it is a way of rebelling
*They enjoy pain
*They are stupid.

i was talking to like the most emo girl i know and she said
its because
she can't take the emotional pain (lol)
so she would rather take the physical pain and take the emotional pain off of her mind

from what i gathered over my high school career is that they do it to not focus on something else and this is the one i dont get "to release emotions"

We had an assembly kinda thing at our school about it...apparently they do it becuase they feel they deserve to be "punished" becuase noone likes them I guess they think they are bad people. =/

Well they focus on the pain of the cut and forget what emotion is bothering them. I learned this in a book but, I can't say I'm 100% right.

Meh, I agree with some of that...

What pisses me off about people that are EMO is becuase they don't have legit issues to be depressed about, thats why I think they don't measure up to me, I got so much ***** in my life and I go through hell nearly everyday and I still come out with smile...even if I feel like ***** inside or w/e.
