| Gunzfactorian Patriot | Hi, I'm -HellSyn-. I don't care about fame, critics, etc. on this topic. I'll discuss the basics of gladiator and a way to play without the use of butterflying and etc. Lets start with the main goal of gladiator. Throughout the time I've played, I seen mostly people butterflying saying "I'm good, I can bfly" and etc., but I find that nonsense. Most people go "Oh, I can beat him if I turtle, but if I do, I'm n00b!" in their heads and just bfly also. I would just go in a turtle and kill the bastard. I don't like butterfly + variations personally as it forces you to slash at air and never receive the hits you always want. I don't like people who believe sky/ground block are the ONLY blocks in existence to block massives, there is a better solution. ====================================== The following is for "Defensive" players. As for me, I'm almost full Offensive but I use these tactics to defend myself so I wont be stopped. These are of course, "Side Massive Strikes" used to break ANY BLOCK. I do NOT claim any of the following, as people already have known these. I'm here to reinstate things I dont see very often. Now, for me to tell some abstract terms: -Parallel Massive Strike -Mirror Block With just these two mastered, you can basically destroy the other player. But what do these terms mean? [Parallel Massive Strike] As the title says, this is a massive strike used in a certain way. Parallel means "Same direction but never touching", but in this case, it just means "Same direction where the enemy faces." Example: Lets say, my enemy is blocking towards his left (my right of course), so I face towards MY RIGHT and massive strike. This will just break the enemy's block, doesnt matter if they are facing up or down. Extra: There is a high chance that people will skyblock doing mirror or normal blocks. What you can do is do a parallel diagonal massive, it should work. Why is it called Parallel? Well, if you read the text above, my enemy faces to my right, and I face to my right, so we both face in same direction, thus coming with the term "parallel". [Mirror Block] This is the counter to every massive, doesnt matter if face up or down, it just magically "dodges" if used right. Mirror means "Opposite", so in GunZ terms, we will be blocking "opposite from enemy's direction". Example: If my enemy massives towards his left (my right), I block towards my left (his right), and the massive will MISS. Doesn't matter if face up or down, it just misses. Why is it called Mirror? Because in the example above, we dont even FACE EACH OTHER OR IN SAME DIRECTION, we FACED AWAY FROM ONE ANOTHER. Thus, it becomes "Opposites", which can be referred as "Mirror". [Knowing thy Foe] (Will be updated later) ----- tactic to knowing enemies: Always in first 3-5 fights, DO NOT EXPECT TO WIN, but learn how your enemy moves, counters, their directions, etc. Knowing their direction is key since this guide requires you to know the direction of massive/block. You have to also know if enemy is defensive or offensive type (I'm head-on offensive). If you are dead, you can still observe via watching through other players and see how your opponents play. While I have played, I noticed some common habits between MOST players. 1-When people do a block or a massive, they usually turn LEFT on first one 2-When people are flipped, they tend to spam slash before landing 3-When someone does backwards play, they spam stalk So how to counter these? (solutions to the number above) 1-Since they turn to their left on block, massive strike them towards your right. Since they tend to massive while turning left, just block towards your left, keep safe and continue moving ahead to avoid any slashes or you can flip/slash them while they stuck. 2-If they do slash, always keep a block hold when flipping or instafalling, etc. This will usually give you a charge massive, use this as you wish, if you want to play it safe, flip em again. 3-These guys are annoying to me as I'm a head-on offensive fighter. My counter, although not the best, is to run into them with a block towards the side, aiming for the block stun. ===================================== [Ground-Based Combat] We all know this, so I'll just say it again. Tired of slashing at air constantly hoping to hit that other bastard? Well, heres a solution that will sure piss some people off, we will abuse the defensive play known as "turtling" so you can stay on the floor and watch the idiots go around. "Defensive/Offensive - Which are you?" When you slash on floor, you DO NOT face directly at the enemy, but a little bit ahead of them, or where they will land in the next half second or so. Reason is because slashing directly MISSES most of time when enemy is moving in a general direction away from your view. I recommend these: [Blocking] People in the upper levels will try to slash your sides, back, and tipslash to lure you into massive striking. Heres a solution I use for that. 1) When being slashed at your sides: -This happens the most often, mainly its a butterflyer circling or people jumping to your sides, to counter this, always block AHEAD of where they slash. THIS DOES NOT GUARANTEE A STUNNED OPPONENT. If they get blockstunned, you are free to do as you wish, if they don't, I suggest running into them with block ahead of the direction they are going. 2) When being slashed at your back: -This doesn't happen alot, but there are some who CAN SLASH AT YOUR BACK. You can always do same method as above, but it isn't the most effective. -Another way to block these slashes is to face towards your back (mainly against triangle-point players and guys who do a bfly at your back as they pass by). 3) When being tipslashed (including tipslash spam): -Do not massive strike unless you believe they are left with an opening. Most of these people either double butterfly with hardly any movement or do stalk combos at a certain distance. Don't ever jump into these people blindly, one way is to jump into them with a block hold and running pass by them (to avoid flip). -Adding second solution when I get home at 8:00 PM PST. [Voidstep] (I'll be using Hymn's name for it, for void = cancel/nothing) [SlashBlock => Repeat] (For those of you who dont know, SlashBlock=slash and block immediately, if i say Slash => Block, it must be done slower) This is best for tipslash and/or luring the enemy as they pass by to hit you. If you can do this real fast, this can be used as a deadly technique for you can spam this until they die. This allows you to block any incoming attacks and massives as you slash rapidly. To be used more effectively, you must MOVE while doing this so it performs faster (I usually hold forward). [Instafall] (Yes, you may find this awkward) [Uppercut => Block => Jump => Slash => Block] (DO NOT HOLD KEYS, JUST TAP THEM IN ORDER) This is useful in many cases, when enemy is stunned, you can force them into instafall BUT ONLY do 1 slash fall, it may trick the enemy into safe falling later. If the enemy safe falls early, I recommend do one [Slashblock] with a block hold to hit them and see if they try to slash you before they land, if done right, they recieve a hit and get blockstunned, allowing you a free massive or another insta/flip/etc. [Stalking] (Slash combos) Basic variation: [Slashblock => Slashblock => Dbfly] Stalking helps alot too as its mostly ground-based with some jump/dashing. This allows you to slash ALOT faster than a butterflyer on steroids. Stalking is offensive in terms of the damage per second and its use when rushing onto a stunned or locked enemy. If used defensively, its like a barrier that says "Come and die" and can be used to leadhit through luring methods. [Other Situations] Q: So what if they jumped pass you and massive? A: Easy, if they face at you as they jump pass, you can turn and block. If they dont and just continue looking away, dont turn and just block, you will dodge it. Q: So what if they do a diagonal massive? A: Just block diagonally in opposite direction. Q: Is Parallel or Mirror greater than the other? A: Nope, they are polar opposites and can beat one another. Q: What it still be ground-based if I use some dashing to get around? A: Yes, you are mostly fighting on the floor instead of in the air. ========================================= EDITED 1: Added note about skyblockers under parallel in yellow. Videos will be included soon, depending on demand. Edited 2: Added "Knowing thy Foe" Edited 3: Added Some more Edited 4: Added a pre-mature section of blocking ========================================= Thats all for now, may edit later. ~HellSyn Last edited by HellSyn; 11-30-2007 at 09:16 AM. |

| Gunzfactorian Soldier | They've criscened it the mirror block! Guess what sherlock, half the blocks involved aren't a mirror reflection. If it were, then massives to the left or right wouldn't be blocked if you block like you were facing a mirror. Also, phase massive is blocked by reverse block, once again, not a mirror. Reverse phase massive, you don't turn, not a mirror. Phase left/right massive, actually is a mirror that time. I know all this because I think I was the only person to master this type of blocking, b4 it was attempted by everyone, and no, i'm not talking about reverse blocking or glitch evading like diamons. Massives are nothing in gladiator anyways, the 'gladiators' of today worry too much about massives and blocking and not enough time on important shiit, NOW all they learn to do is massive and block to gain more flips >.> |

| Gunzfactorian Patriot | Are you sure you released it at right time? People tend to release too early between the sides. Otherwise, I would use back diagonals, works like a charm. I never had any problems with these two as of yet. |

--- The mirror block thing. Deeead wrong. >.>; It doesn't block anything. The reason you might actually block something when turning is because you turned in the correct direction when the massive was used. To block a massive is 45 degrees away from where the person uses it, but it has to be in the correct side, opposite from where they turn. So if you think someone's a rightey, then you have to turn right as well because their massive would be on your left. Kay? Also, this only works when recoiled. Recoiled = left vs. right battle, normal = up vs. down. So let's say someone tries this dumb ass "mirror block" of yours. My answer? Walk behind them so that their block follows me, turn the OPPOSITE WAY I WAS WALKING to avoid their 45 degree block and bam. Last edited by Cerb3rus; 11-27-2007 at 09:29 AM. | |

| Gunzfactorian Soldier | I have Diamons on my ignore list but I can assume that he directed that comment towards me. I didn't say I invented the above block, I just did it better than anyone else, and no, not all things were invented, if you wanna challenge me on that, I can list some moves I made and you can confirm it with that apparently vast gladiator archive you call a brain. And I don't know where you get this from Diamons, the people you call 'the veterans' weren't anything special, you're comparing Boyan to cerb? comeon, stop holding onto the memory of these past 'gladiator pros' just because you feel they're the last shred of gladiator left, and therefore continue to hype them as if they were godly compared to people now. From what I know and people confirm, cerb ruled back then over these people, and now that hes better than he was back then, you still talk like they're better than he. Hell, I bet even you were above these people, you put yourself second to Cerb. Maybe if you'd stop being emo about how 'gladiator is a joke/died/sucks now' and actually contributed instead of just saying shiit like "LOL DISGRACE TO OLD GLADIATORS I GO EAT CURRY NOW" in everrrrrrrrryy post pertaining to gladiator, then maybe there would be more of a community to speak of. You continue to assert yourself as "a gladiator of back then" so do something about the community now instead of talking down to everyone that mentions it. ass. |

The only true gladiators left from then? BT_Harmony, Vietblade, and Cerb. Dylan and you are newbies, though I've got more respect for Dylan. Your only move is block Deviok. I'm pretty sure Boyan could kick your ass. He was Korean. Boyan knew when and how to slash; he was so fast block was practically useless unless you knew where and when to block, something you can't do. You just spam your useless void block, so fail. Oh by the way, flipping was allowed back then so you couldn't hold that block all day; required more skill and effort. Nowadays you just block flipping/say it isn't allowed so whenever you spam your block all day you don't get flipped and dead. Stop trying to act like you're some sort of pro gladiator, as certified by your signature. Last I checked, you can't even win a fight without your void block. | |

![]() ![]() | Eh how do you judge if they massive left or right... Everyone I see massives in front? Or do you mean left or right to slight degree and not 90 degrees right. I;ve always been confused about that when I try to block left and right and crap. Also I would love someone really good at gladiator to help me D: All I really use is block, and the slash - slash - dbf combo with kodachis. Is the rest just knowing what angles to look, and timing? I love how he "blocked" me when I just flamed the crap out of him; he couldn't think of **** to come back with. Hellsyn, ignore Deviok. He just thinks he's some sort of "gladiator god" and thinks all sword guides are crap, although this does need some editing. Also look at his signature, you'll see how much of a joke he is to everyone ![]() | |

| Gunzfactorian Patriot | I dont know Deviok :0 But i dont like people bringing in flame about "pro gladiators". I do know my guide needs editing though, but i'm trying to list all my tactics and such on a document before posting on here. I'll be adding some habit-based things as of now. @Darkbanana: If they turn a little to left or right, you can already use the two things I posted. If they only face forward, you use reverse massive, its the parallel. If you need more help, find me in IGunZ as "-HellSyn-". I'll be posting some videos later to help. |
