When the sun becomes a red giant and dissolves our atmosphere I think the Earth is finished.

BUT

Yesterday I read about terraforming on wikipedia; it's the process of modifying the enviroment of another planet to make it habitable for humans. Apparently, Titan, Mars, and the Moon are being looked at. Imagine those planets with a breathable atmosphere, seas and continents of their own.

BUT BUT

then the Sun dies and becomes either a hammer-wielding dwarf or it becomes a black hole and we whirlpool in! Unless of course we escape to another solar system and terraform some more or make contact with ETs.
